Why Road Safety Should Be Part of Every Workplace Wellbeing Conversation

Every workday starts and ends with movement.

Employees ride motorcycles, drive cars, take buses, book rides, cross streets, or wait for public transport. For many, commuting is already part of the job. But when we talk about employee wellbeing, road safety is often left out of the conversation.

It should not be.

InLife Benefits recently launched its Expert Opinion Series: Road Safety to take a closer look at how daily travel affects employees, families, and organizations. The discussion features Engr. Aileen Mappala of the UP National Center for Transportation Studies, who shares her view on everyday commuting in the Philippines and why safer mobility should matter to both people and companies.

The topic came from a real concern. Based on recent member utilization observations, InLife Benefits saw recurring motorcycle and vehicular accident-related incidents among members. This led to the launch of the Road Safety Program as part of its prevention-to-protection approach.

This matters because road incidents can affect more than a person’s health. A crash can affect income, work attendance, family stability, and long-term financial security. For employers, it can also affect workforce readiness, morale, and productivity.

Road safety is not only a public transport issue. It is a workplace issue.

It asks companies to look at employee wellbeing beyond office walls. It also reminds employees that small daily choices can lower risk. Wearing a helmet. Avoiding phone use while driving. Following speed limits. Planning travel time. Staying alert. These habits may sound basic, but they can save lives.

The need is clear. The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that deaths due to land transport accidents reached 13,125 in 2023, the highest recorded in more than ten years.

Through this video, InLife Benefits hopes to open a practical conversation: How can organizations help employees stay protected before an accident happens?

For HR teams and employers, this is a chance to add road safety to wellness programs, employee education, and benefits planning. For employees, it is a reminder that safe mobility starts with awareness and daily action.
