For many Filipinos, seeing a doctor still feels like something that should happen face-to-face. You visit a clinic, wait for your turn, and get checked in person.
But with telemedicine, that first step can now happen online.
In this Expert Opinion Series episode, InLife Benefits speaks with Dr. Cecilia Paz Cruz-Ram, or Dr. Z, Medical Director for Doctor Anywhere Philippines, to answer one key question: Can your first consultation really be done online?
According to Dr. Z, yes, as long as the case is not an emergency.
Online consultations can help with common health concerns like cough, colds, fever, mild abdominal pain, and follow-ups for stable chronic conditions such as hypertension or diabetes. Through proper questions, medical history, and visual observation, doctors can assess symptoms and guide patients on the next steps.
Telemedicine also saves time. Patients can consult from home, during breaks, or from any private and quiet space. It helps reduce travel time, clinic waiting time, and other costs linked to in-person visits.
Still, Dr. Z is clear: telemedicine does not replace emergency care. Severe symptoms like massive bleeding, stroke-like signs, uncontrolled blood pressure, severe headache, or large wounds should be brought directly to the nearest hospital.
So, can your first consultation really be done online?
Yes, when used at the right time, in the right place, and for the right health concern.
